Sometimes the biggest challenge after a breakup isn’t the change itself, but the way adults manage to get through it.
Some time ago, in our work, we met a family that was going through a difficult period following a separation. There was ongoing tension between the parents, which often took center stage in their daily lives. Each of them experienced the situation differently and had difficulty understanding the other’s point of view.
From the very beginning, our main focus was on the child – how what was happening between the parents was affecting the child’s development and emotional well-being. Although the conflicts created uncertainty and strong emotions, it gradually became clear that the child retained the ability to develop calmly and adapt to the changes. Paradoxically, it was precisely this adaptation that proved much more difficult for the parents themselves.
When conflict between parents persists for a long time, children often find themselves in a situation that is difficult for them to understand and make sense of. They may feel confused, torn between their two parents, or even take on responsibility for problems beyond their control. Even when they show no obvious signs of anxiety, the tension in the family environment can affect their sense of security and peace of mind. That is precisely why it is so important for adults to find ways to manage their conflicts without involving the child in them.
During the meetings, we worked to focus attention on the child’s needs and on the role of parents in creating a more predictable and secure environment. There were moments of progress – there was more understanding, dialogue, and a willingness to change. There were also periods when old conflicts resurfaced and hindered this process.
Despite the challenges, the family took an important step forward. Issues that had long been a source of tension began to be recognized and addressed. This is often the first and most difficult step toward real change.
Today, the child continues to develop appropriately for his age and is adapting well. This case reminds us how important it is for adults to receive timely support when they are going through difficulties – not only for their own well-being, but also so they can remain a secure and stable source of support for their children.
At the core of every child’s being lies the need for peace of mind, predictability, and the sense that both parents remain by their side, regardless of their relationship with each other. It is precisely this sense of security that is the most precious gift adults can give a child, even during a separation.
