Words that give confidence

July 20 2026

Sometimes a single word, a single sound, or an attempt at conversation can be much more than just a small step. They can be the beginning of self-confidence and a connection to the world around us.

Sofia was almost 5 years old when we first met her. She was growing up in a blended family – with a Bulgarian mother and a foreign father. She was an extremely shy child who was very attached to her mother. Although she attended preschool, her mother told us that Sofia had a hard time joining in her peers’ games, didn’t have many friends, and was nervous about communicating freely with both children and adults.

Behind this insecurity lay significant language and speech difficulties. Due to the bilingual environment in which she was growing up, Sofia was seriously behind in her language development. Her vocabulary was limited, and her answers to questions were often just one word. When faced with more complex questions, she would sometimes repeat what she had heard instead of formulating her own answer.

Added to this were difficulties with pronunciation. Sofia was able to pronounce correctly only some of the sounds that typically appear earlier in a child’s speech. More complex words posed a challenge, and her speech was often difficult for those around her to understand. She was aware of this herself and felt embarrassed when she wasn’t understood.

The child’s difficulties also took a toll on the mother. She felt anxious and guilty, wondering if she had waited too long to seek help and if she had somehow negatively affected her child’s development.

Sofia began working with a speech-language pathologist at the Early Childhood Development Center. The beginning wasn’t easy. During the first few sessions, she had a hard time separating from her mother, was nervous about speaking in front of the specialist, and felt insecure in the new environment.

So the first step was to build trust. The speech-language pathologist started with topics that were familiar and interesting to Sofia—animals, plants, kindergarten, and her daily life at home. Through games, cards, and pictures, they gradually began to expand her vocabulary and create a calm environment where she felt free to speak.

Before long, Sofia had already placed her trust in the specialist. Her anxiety gradually gave way to curiosity, and the actual speech therapy work began with increasing confidence. Targeted work to improve articulation and speech development began.

One of the most important moments was the first time she correctly pronounced the “S” sound. For Sofia, this was much more than just a sound. She heard her own speech in a new way and realized she could do it. This small but significant success changed her attitude toward therapy. From that moment on, she began attending the sessions with joy and enthusiasm.

Gradually, Sofia began seeking more interaction with the other children. She would increasingly strike up conversations with a peer in the hallway of the Early Childhood Development Center, and her mother noted that this change was also evident at preschool and on the playground.

Over time, Sofia’s vocabulary expanded, her sentences became increasingly well-structured, and she used her speech with growing confidence to express her thoughts and desires.

Sofia’s story shows that with timely support, appropriate therapy, and a lot of patience, significant difficulties can be overcome. At first, she was an insecure child who was afraid to communicate and had trouble finding the right words. Gradually, thanks to the trusting relationship with her specialist and consistent work, she began to find her voice.

The biggest change wasn’t just in the correct pronunciation of sounds or a richer vocabulary. The most valuable change was her confidence – Sofia’s desire to communicate, to seek connection, and to be an active part of the world around her.

Improving speech isn’t just about words. It’s a path to better adaptation, self-esteem, and emotional well-being.

And Sofia’s story reminds us that behind every small step is a child who needs understanding, support, and someone who believes in their potential.
