A short story about the support of a single parent

January 05 2021

The second-grader Kristian Georgiev is a child with developmental difficulties, whom we met 2 years ago. His father, Krassimir Georgiev, sought help at our Center for Public Support in Sofia for his child.

We included him in our Early Childhood Intervention program and the specialists Petya Yanachkova, Family Consultant and Raya Tsvetanova, Senior Specialist Early Childhood Intervention, started working with him. We prepared a special program for the activities, tailored to the individual capabilities and needs of the child, which took into account his uniqueness. We encouraged him to develop his talent for painting, his creative thinking, his creativity, we built together with his confidence in his own abilities.

We also received support from my father, who actively cooperated with us. In parallel, we worked with him, helping him to develop better parenting skills to stimulate the child’s development. He became a more confident and motivated parent.

Thus, Christian advanced in his development overcame many of his deficits, began to apply what he had learned.

He soon became a first-grader in a mainstream school and impressed his classmates and teachers with his talent for painting.

Today he is a second-grader and we are happy that he recites verses confidently.

At the end of last year, Christian’s father called us again to consult and tell us about the child’s progress. Here is the letter he sent us:

“I want to thank the specialists of the For Our Children Foundation.

Some time ago, after going from institution to institution and shrugging my shoulders, wishing good luck, I saw information about the Center for Public Support and decided to find out if they will wish me luck there as well, but I was pleasantly surprised. In the center they made a lot of efforts to help me.

And not only to my son Christian, but to me. I am a single father raising my son, who is a child with special needs. During the period we visited the center, Christian made progress. Even after the end of the support period, the staff helped us with both advice and proper referral to certain institutions.

My son is already in second grade.

THANKS to Petya Yanachkova and Raya Tsvetanova. They changed Christian’s life and gave me hope to fight. I would like to continue working together in the future. I am very pleased with the attitude, professionalism and skills of Petya Yanachkova and Raya Tsvetanova.
